Also can only the mattress be purchased and placed on an existing base?

Hi Geoff. The height of the Majestic Firm mattress is 40cm. The Height of base with draws is 40cm. Height of base without draws is 35cm. The height of the wheels are 7cm. While you can put the mattress on an existing base, we don't recommend it. The mattress has been design to be used on the base it is paired with. Hope this helps with your query
