Worked great after resolving user error
My user error: didnt install driver first. Installed the driver and then the software. Plugged in the VHS player to the appropriate 2.0 USB not SS usb. Made sure the plug the connectors up to the correct VHS side of the player and not the dvd side. :) Program worked perfect! I have a windows 10 system and recorded then played with windows media player or vlc without issue.
I would like to see Elgato move forward with this and make sure it works with new windows and mac computers. Upgrade the device to be compatible with 3.0 / SS usb ports. appreciate the friendly support line though! thank you!

Great looking device, very sad performance.
Simple to connect RCA to USB on iMac, but very disappointed with the video output. The captured movies are banded, with blothchy color. Same VHS tape and player performed well on my 32" TV, so it isn't the tape or the VCR causing the problem.
I used my iPad to film the TV screen and that worked much better.
I also tried using my iPhone to capture the video on the TV screen and that worked marginally better than the iPad.
Screenshots of the two movies are attached.

Keep away
Purchased to transfer old family VHS videos and the software is problematic. The videos run fine in the viewing window during the recording process, all the way to completion including all audio and video, but I believe something goes wrong during the subsequent file generation process. Any time after roughly 1 hour into viewing to digital output, the audio randomly drops for no reason, video might be randomly cut off, and in one case the entire video speeds up as if it's fast forwarding. No explanation whatsoever. This is happening in multiple video players on both a PC and televisions that accept MP4 files. It is not my PC or the video players. I believe the Elgato software is buggy. I'm forced to split all videos into multiple 45 minute segments and even then the tail end of some videos are disappearing all together when digitized. I regret my purchase and would advise you stay away all together. A waste of both my time and my money.

Used to be a great product – but crashes on M1 Mac
I used to LOVE this product, but it continually crashes at the VERY END of video transfers. I think this is because the software is no longer compatible with the latest (ie. M1) Macs. I'm providing the crash logs to Elgato in the hopes they will troubleshoot.

Okay but
I bought this to digitize hi-8 cassettes from my sony handycam. the software is extremely outdated and outputs a very compressed and lackluster video. however, by using obs to screen record the elgato video capture application, i am able to record the preview that displays in the app which is much higher quality. elgato should update the app and allow users to save the video output with no compression.

Worked great for me!
I read some of the lesser reviews, but I experienced none of the issues that others have had. I believe many issues were user error. I downloaded the app and while it's not 100% intuitive, in a short while it was easily doing exactly what I expected. It will record in various file sizes: Larger for clarity or smaller for disc space conservation. Editing tool to trim video was easy to use. Results were outstanding considering the source video. I posted some VHS video taken 30 years ago to Facebook and people were amazed. I will say that the video looks much better for Facebook than when it is full-screen, but it did come from antiquated VHS tape that will never compare to HD video we've become accustomed to. It can be darker and lack the resolution of an iPhone video. That's not the fault of this product. Video can be upscaled, but there are limits.

Not sure about the poor reviews.
This adapter worked great for digitizing our old family VHS collection of 40+ tapes. I'm not sure why all the negative reviews. Just be sure to play back the video after trimming and saving to be sure there aren't any audio-sync issues or anything with the saved file and you are good to go. I have had the app crash on occasion but that is relatively rare considering how many hours of tape I've converted. It is also working well on Apple Silicon.
If you're having issues, be sure everything on your PC/Mac is updated with the latest drivers etc. and you should be good to go.

Terrible
Have to be a sleuth to find the app to download. I connected the device to my VCR and computer via the instructions and installed the required software. When I run the software it just pops up a window that states: "Please connect your Elgato Video Capture hardware to any USB 2.0 port." I tried unplugging the USB cable several times and tried multiple computers with the same results.
