How to decide which washing machine to buy?

Take a moment to consider the following so you can decide with confidence:

  • The size and load capacity - what's your household size? Choose washing and drying loads based on your household size. Learn more
  • Programs and Features - besides your standard settings and features, what are the latest tech to make your laundry days better? Learn more
  • Performance and efficiency - choose a machine that gently cares for your garments as needed, quietly and cost-effectively. Learn more
  • Placement and fit - think about the space it will occupy. Will it be under a counter? Stacked? Are you after a specific look? Learn more

Top loaders

Load your washing from the top of the machine into the drum.

Some units have central agitator posts to remove dirt and stains, while others have impellers that are gentler on garments.

  • Top loaders are usually more budget-friendly
  • More streamlined, generally waist-high and slightly taller than front loaders
  • Most of our top loaders have water star ratings (WELS) of 3.5 to 4 stars and Energy star ratings of 3 to 4.5 stars.

Front loaders

Load your washing from the front of the machine. Front-loaders use gravity and the tumbling motion to clean.

  • The tumbling motion is gentler on clothes
  • Uses less water and electricity compared to top loaders
  • Best bang for buck in terms of performance and specs
  • Versatile - can be standalone, stackable, or integrated into cabinetry.

Washer dryers

Dual-purpose front loaders that wash and dry laundry using gravity and the tumbling motion.

Be aware that drying capacities are usually less than washing load capacities, in some cases, only half.

  • Space-saving, two-in-one appliance
  • Units typically sit in the mid-to-high price range
  • Save on power and water! Washer-dryers strike a middle ground for efficiency. Greener than top loaders, but not as eco-friendly as front loaders. Ours come with four to five-star energy ratings and WELS water ratings of 4.5 stars
  • Can simplify the washing and drying process.

What size washing machine do I need?

The size of the washing machine you need should be based on your household size and how often you do your laundry each week.

2.5 kgs of washing per person is a good rule of thumb; This also accounts for standard weekly bedding washes.

Couples or smaller households of up to three people

We typically recommend 7.5KG to 9KG washing machines.

Households of four people or more

We generally recommend 10KG washing machines.

Big families or households with five or more people

We recommend machines with a minimum load capacity of 11 kg or more.

What type of clothes dryer is best?

The best clothes dryer balances drying efficiency, gentle care, affordability, cost savings, eco-friendliness, and reduced humidity issues.

Heat pump dryers

Heat pump dryers utilise a small heat pump to efficiently heat and recirculate air during the drying process.

They operate at a lower temperature range and with reduced drum rotations (RPMs), resulting in more effective drying.

  • The most gentle on garments of the three models and best at preventing clothing shrinkage
  • May take longer to dry washing compared to their vented counterparts
  • Lower RPMs (rotations per minute) could result in less wear on clothes
  • Regarded as the most eco-friendly of the three, with some models boasting ten-star energy ratings.

Condenser dryers

Condenser dryers use a heating element to warm the incoming air and a heat exchanger to condense moisture into water, which can be drained away or collected in a water tank that can be emptied.

  • Quicker at drying compared to heat pump dryers due to higher operating temperatures
  • Produces less condensation than a vented dryer
  • Mid-range pricing that balances performance and price - condenser dryers cost more than vented models but are still more affordable than heat pump dryers
  • No need to be vented outside.

Vented dryers

Vented dryers have heating elements that warm the air circulating through the dryer. This process also evaporates moisture, effectively drying your laundry.

  • Fastest at drying of the three models due to higher operating temperatures
  • Most affordable units among the three models
  • They tend to be noisier than condenser and heat pump units due to the fan that expels hot air
  • No Wi-Fi connectivity or app configurations
  • Requires proper ventilation; if correctly vented, moist, warm air is directed outside.

Washing machine and dryer placement

Already picked the perfect spot for your new washer or dryer? Great, now make sure your choice works with the space. Even if you've locked in the location, it's still worth double-checking a few practical details before you buy.

Things to look out for: clearance space, power and water connections, ventilation needs, and stacking compatibility, so your machine fits and functions seamlessly in your home. Whether it's a tight laundry cupboard or a full-sized laundry room, getting the right setup from the start will save you hassle later.

Brands often have their own distinct look, which may strike a preference. Many washer and dryers are designed as matching pairs, making it easy to create a cohesive look. To keep things simple, our washer dryer bundles take the guesswork out of finding a coordinated combo.

Standalone or with one mounted

Standalone, it holds its own, but with a matching dryer mounted overhead, completes the look!

Not to mention, it's much easier on your knees when loading or unloading laundry. Check the clearance to ensure lids can open fully.

Side-by-side

Match your washer and dryer for a seamless look! If they're going to be side-by-side, having them mismatched will be obvious.

Match them by colour - to benchtops, cabinetry, and other appliances. Or, by brand, as brand loyalists will appreciate!

Stacked with stacking kits

Just like side-by-sides, matching your washer and dryer stack creates a cohesive look! Built-in, they look great with matching cabinetry or benchtops.

Stacking units saves floor space as well, so it's worth a look! Putting the dryer on top seems to be the usual approach.

Worried about dampness or condensation at home?

Condenser dryers are your best option to keep your space warm and dry.

Laundry tubs

A laundry tub (or supertub) is a standalone sink built for laundry tasks, essential if your washing machine isn't plumbed directly into the drainage system.

  • Perfect for items that need that extra stain treatment, scrubbing, or soaking
  • You might appreciate extra storage for your laundry essentials
  • Completes your laundry set-up (where space is available).

According to the Laundering Acceptable Solutions G2/AS1 of the New Zealand Building Code (NZBC), all laundering facilities must include either a laundry tub or service connections for a washing machine.

6 practical laundry hacks

  1. Cut drying time in half - when the wash cycle ends, set your laundry to spin dry or do an extra spin and drain cycle for around 10 minutes. Then, transfer your laundry to the dryer.
  2. Dry full loads when possible - This maximises energy efficiency and helps to reduce your power bill.
  3. Prevent costly breakdowns - by regularly cleaning your lint filter and emptying water tanks. Cleaning prevents blockages and overheating, while emptying the tank avoids condensation issues.
  4. Prevent moisture issues - Consider using a dehumidifier in your laundry room while your dryer is running.
  5. Help speed up the drying time - Use dryer balls to help move items around better, and air to circulate.
  6. Keep the noise down - Use noise reducing mats or anti-vibration foot pads for washing machines and dryers.
