Never lose a file again with our internal and external storage solutions
Let’s be honest – there is nothing worse than that ‘Storage Full’ pop-up appearing right when you’re trying to save something important. A storage device is essential for saving all your data and media, especially as a photographer with a mountain of RAW files, a gamer needing space for the latest gaming update, or just backing up precious family photos.
Types of storage devices available
Harvey Norman offers a vast range of external drives for your desktop computer, tablet, laptop, and even gadgets like digital cameras, smartphones, DSLRs, drones, dash cams, security cameras and gaming console compatible memory cards (like Nintendo). Always check your device specifications before purchasing.
- External hard drive: Great for backing up your whole laptop or taking your movie library on holiday.
- Super-fast SSDs: If you are tired of waiting for files to load, you need a Solid State Drive. They are much faster than an HDD. Ideal for running operating systems, data-intensive tasks, application & software loading, content creation and video editing (4K and 8K), and games.
- USB flash drives & thumb drives: Small, portable, and super handy for transferring, storing and backing up files (documents, pictures and videos). Keep one in your bag for quick printing jobs, school assignments, or sharing photos with friends.
- SD & microSD cards: SD cards are typically used in professional cameras, while microSD cards are built for phones, drones, and consoles. For greater versatility, you could buy a microSD card with an adapter, allowing you to slot it into any device.
- Card readers & holders: No SD card slot on your laptop? Fret not, our plug-and-play readers get your photos from your camera to the screen in seconds. Plus, grab a sturdy holder so those tiny cards don’t go missing in the junk drawer.
How much space do I actually need?
- 1 TB: great for most people – you can store plenty of photos, movies, and documents
- 2TB+: best for gamers and videographers who have massive files
- 128GB – 512GB: perfect for SD cards and USBs to give your devices a little extra storage space, helping boost productivity and uninterrupted workflow
Can I use any microSD card for Nintendo Switch?
The short answer is yes; you can use almost any microSD card. But there are a few things you need to check to make sure it's compatible.
- It must be a microSD card. The Nintendo Switch 2 is compatible only with microSD Express cards.
- The Switch supports three generations of cards: microSD (up to 2GB), microSDHC (4GB to 32 GB), and microSDXC (64GB+).
- Nintendo recommends using UHS-I cards with a read speed of 60-96 MB/s.
- And we recommend using one from a reputable brand, such as SanDisk, to keep your games safe.
What does read/write speed mean?
Read/write speed is how fast a storage device opens files (read) and saves files (write). Measured in MB/s or GB/s. The higher the speed, the quicker your device feels - with faster startups, file transfers, and smoother performance. Higher speeds are important for tasks like video recording, gaming or transferring large files.
What is the difference between HDD and SSD?
HDDs (hard disk drives) use spinning disks to store data. It’s more affordable and offers lots of storage space – great for long-term storage. SSDs (solid state drives), on the other hand, have no moving parts. So, it’s much faster, quieter and great for quick startups, gaming and everyday performance.
Quick Tips for choosing
Speed or space? If you need to move large files fast (like video editing and RAW files), go for an SSD. If you need something to archive thousands of family photos, a standard Hard Drive gives you more space for a lower cost.
Is my data safe on an external storage device?
Storage devices are reliable, but no device is fail-proof. For important files, it’s best to keep backups in more than one place or use cloud storage alongside physical devices to protect yourself from data loss.
