Rated 1 out of 5 by from Grinder broke with 6 months of use. Coffee machine worked fine for 6 months, but then the grinder failed. I took it back to the store expecting a replacement as the unit comes with a replacement guarantee, but apparently this guarantee is a lie and they will only repair. I'm now without a coffee machine for at least 3 weeks, and once repaired I assume the grinder will break again when out of warranty period and I'll have a very expensive paperweight. I recommend looking elsewhere for a more reliable coffee machine as buying this will result in more unnecessary e-waste.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed – Grinder Failed After Just 18 Months Disappointed – Grinder Failed After Just 18 Months I had high hopes for the Breville Barista coffee machine, especially given the price and reputation. It worked well for the first year, but just 18 months in, the built-in grinder completely stopped working. For a machine marketed as premium, this kind of failure is unacceptable. I expected better build quality and durability. Now I’m stuck with a half-functioning machine and no support since it’s just out of warranty. Not worth the investment—look elsewhere if you want reliability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect! I had an entry-level Breville machine for about ten years that finally gave way, and I upgraded to this one. It grinds the beans, which tastes far better than buying ground (and is cheaper), it doesn't make a mess getting the ground coffee into the group head, it gets good extraction, it froths fine, it has a very capacious water tank and drip tray, and it isn't over the top with unnecessary digital components that break down. Every part seems good quality. I was also really impressed with the thoughtful packaging, which was eco friendly and polystyrene-free. Basically this machine is perfect for my needs and I'm delighted with it every single day. Breville are on fire at the moment with their coffee machines and I think this one hits the sweet spot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Packs a punch at this price point I was previously a housesitter, staying at owners houses looking after their pets while they were away. At most homes there was a coffee machine, from pod machines up to full espresso machines costing several thousands. I stayed at one home that had a Breville Barista Express and was really impressed by the quality of the coffee. When I finally stopped housesitting and moved into my own home I had already decided on my coffee machine! The Barista Express includes everything a more expensive machine has, from freshly grinding the beans to making perfect foamed milk, yet it's straightforward to use. Breville also have lots of videos on their website which I found really useful, including lots of tips to make a better coffee. Very happy with my purchase!

As an ex-barista I feel it has just the right mix of automation and flexibility...visible pressure gauge is especially have on a home machine so you can see the results of your grind/ tamp adjustments. Removable tamp and a great steam wand that has decent pressure to create silky milk every time.

I have to have my flat white coffee first thing in the morning along with my dunked gingernuts, so chuck out the old and bring in the new. It does the trick to perfection and I've yet to buy a coffee elsewhere that beats what I brew on this machine.

But, once you’re in the zone, it won’t let you down. My only minor critique (very minor) is that the steam wand could lack more power. It does take some time to get your milk well steamed. However, perhaps expected for an entry level machine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Consistently Perfect Espressos! I'm a bit of a coffee geek. For thirteen years, I have used an Ascaso grinder and a Rancilio Silvia espresso machine for our coffee at home. However, they have grown old (like me) and the cost of servicing them eventually exceeded their value. So after doing some diligent consumer research, six weeks ago I replaced both machines with a Breville Barista Express. The Rancilio is the Rolls-Royce of home espresso machines, but it requires skill to produce great coffee with it. Everything about it is manually controlled. Now I was about to relinquish that control. I was nervous, unsure that a machine as automated as the Breville would make coffee as excellent as I could achieve with the Rancilio. But the Breville has a very high rating from our NZ Consumer Institute. More than that, an American reviewer, like me, also owned a Rancilio, and wrote that the Barista Express matched the Rancilio quality! It does. There's no higher compliment I can give it. Setting up the grind quantity, grain and shot volume can be tricky, and you'll waste a fair bit of coffee before you get it right. I had to adjust the grind burr setting in order to get it right. And of course, if your favourite coffee blend is out of stock or you just want to try another, you have to do it all over again. For each blend, I keep a record of those settings. Once the settings are right, you'll make perfect espressos, time after time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Steep learning curve for a beginner but I still love my new coffee maker. This is my first 'real' espresso machine and to be honest I'm finding it quite a step learning curve. The machine is excellent but getting a consistent pour, like honey with a nice crema has eluded me but for a few times where I've managed it. I think my main issue is getting a consistent tamp pressure. I have no idea what 10-15kg of pressure is and more often than not I end up with very little liquid and need to push the double shot button at least 3 times. On other occasions I've tried to not press down so hard and after I've used the razor to level it out I've lost the the whole lot into the bin when I've gone to empty the shavings from the top of the filter. I've obviously got a lot to learn but generally speaking the coffees I've made have been passable.

Now the second machine has been at the repair shop for 8 weeks brought it home on Wednesday went to use it today and it won't work is this a problem with all BREVILLE BARISTA EXPRESS MACHINES but it has a different problem now today (Friday) I will be going back to the shop to either get a replacement one or ask for another brand it all depends on what they tell us

Thought I was buying the same quality machine I had known and loved for the pas 5 years New machine has been inconsistent since day 1. Now the machine stays in the pre infusion zone throughout the extraction leaving a pale watery tasteless coffee. The grinder on minimum setting releases excess grounds creating waste. The machine doesn’t turn itself off when unattended and even the steamer is weaker. All in all it seems the build quality is inferior or this one is a lemon.

And you can make it exactly how you like your coffee with a small tweak. It's easy to clean too. I have thrown the kettle away and we only use this now... never buying instant coffee again!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Makes great coffee, but... This machine was our first new espresso machine purchase in eight years. We have previously used Sunbeam, but due to lack of availability decided to change to Breville. The Barista Express is rated very well by users, and is recommended as a machine to get if you want a great coffee on a budget. While we are pleased with the coffee we can produce using this machine, there are a couple of things that we find frustrating in comparison to two other (Sunbeam) machines we have either used or owned. 1. It uses an extraordinary amount of water to make a coffee and steam the milk. Add that to having a small water tank (only 2 litres) and you have to fill it every day, just to make two coffees. 2. There is no warning light to let you know that the water is low (or on a couple of occasions, empty!). This is a real pain because we were so used to having a large water tank AND a red light telling us to refill the tank, so virtually never ran the tank dry on our Sunbeam. However, with the Breville it simply tries to keep espressing, even when the tank is super low, resulting in a frothy mess of espresso. Somehow, the machine seems to be fine after doing this, but I am concerned it will break one day. One last little thing is that the knob you have to turn in order to start the steam wand is very stiff and quite hard to turn, but not a deal breaker. So, overall, we are happy with our choice, but it would be even better if Breville improved the things we have pointed out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from That start of the day that you need This little machine is a ripper, I have used this model before and had to purchase one for myself … we can discuss the trouble I got into from my wife when I was expressly told not to get one, but after she tasted the first taste of the coffee vector I had brewed out this machine she had mixed feeling of disgust of being ignored mixed with the elation of the taste. I can also confirm being the father of 3 hurricane kids this machine is what you need to start your day the right way … especially when on holiday in the van

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Compact unit,good coffee After using this machine for a few weeks I am mostly very happy with our purchase. I am starting to get a great coffee consistently which is my aim. This is a great looking compact all in one Unit, the downside to this is the size of the water tank and drip tray. Switching from coffee to Milk Steamer is a bit slow and shame there isnt a built in milk thermometer . Water isn't what I would consider hot enough but I am used to using the Kettle for boiling water so just continuing to do that. Over all, so far so good :)

I was told that the Pro version is faster, and if I made large numbers of coffees, I may have been tempted to go for that one. However, for the 2 coffees at a time we make, this one has been great.

Would I buy it again yes, but I will say If I didn't drink espresso all the time and steamed milk alot I'd buy the dual boiler, it would be much faster in the morning

The milk frother is pretty good, air pressure could be stronger but for a home machine I’m happy. If I could change anything it would be the tamp, I wish it had more weight to it however I love that it is magnetic and sits in the machine so maybe that’s why it’s so light. Another thing is cleaning the machine, the prospect is a bit scary to me. Maybe a bit more information on it would be good so it seems easier to manage.

My only regret is that it doesn’t have a double boiler so the coffee cools while you froth the milk - easily fixed by adding more hot water

Took me a little while to get the right extraction, but once I nailed it we enjoy coffee after coffee. Lots of compliments from guests. To anyone still deciding, go for it, you will not be disappointed. Just take the time to learn how and when you do you will be able to impress your friends with some wonderful coffee and terms to boggle their minds. You will sound like an expert.

It took a while to get the settings right but since I achieved this it makes a wonderful long black with great crema. The froth for a flat white is pretty good too. A relation who used it recently now intends to replace his machine with a Barista Express.

Questions & Answers

If you want to switch from standard coffee beans to decaf - do you have to scoop all the beans out each time to swap them? Or is there an easier way to do this? We use both standard and decaf on a daily basis.

Hi there, thanks for your question. To save time, you don't need to scoop the beans to replace them. There is a lock/unlock system where you can twist the hopper to detach it from the machine and you can pour this out to replace the beans. Hope this helps! Please note, the machine does come with a manual which will instruct how to do this, moving forward.

Does this have a cup warming area on top?

Hi Louise. Thanks for your question. This has a cup warming try on the top of the machine. A warm cup will help maintain the coffee’s optimal temperature. Pre-heat your cup by rinsing with hot water and place on the cup warming tray. Hope this helps
