What material is the covering of the headboard? Are there alternative colours?

Hi Fran. Thanks for you question. The particular fabric shown in the image is a Warwick fabric called Plush and the colour is Indigo. As this is a New Zealand made headboard, you can select different colours and fabrics from the extensive range in store. The price may vary depending on what fabric you select, but our helpful staff will be able to confirm the pricing for you. Hope this helps with your query.

Is this able to be attached to the bed or does it need to be up against a wall?

Thank you for your question. The Kara headboard has been designed and constructed to allow you to either attach to a bed using the slots and bolts, or this can be placed against a wall.
