Bait and switch
I recently invested in a Philips Hue Play Gradient lightstrip and Hue Bridge to complement my new LG TV, expecting the “immersive sync” experience that’s been widely advertised. Only after setting it all up did I discover that to actually make the lights react to what’s on the screen, I need to pay another NZ $200 (or a monthly subscription) for an extra app — the Hue Sync TV app.
That feature used to be included via the Hue Sync Box, and it’s incredibly disappointing that Philips now locks it behind another paywall. It feels like a bait-and-switch: the hardware is fully capable, but Philips has chosen to restrict the function unless you pay again.
I’ve already spent hundreds of dollars on “smart” lighting and a bridge — it’s frustrating that I now have to pay software rent to use the system as advertised.
Philips should be upfront about these hidden costs when promoting the Hue Play and Bridge as part of a “complete entertainment setup.” As it stands, I feel ripped off and hesitant to buy any more Hue products.
