How it works

It's best to limit the time between grinding and extraction to seconds, not minutes. That's why there's a a grinder built into the Barista Express espresso machine. The in-built conical burr grinder allows you to grind only what you need directly into the portafilter. It's fully adjustable in grind size and dose, so you can tweak to taste. With a dedicated hot water outlet, impressive steam pressure and single wall filters, you'll move from novice to barista in no time at all.

  • Conical burr grinder with dose control
  • Electronic PID temperature control
  • 1700 watt power
  • Dedicated hot water outlet
  • Water filtration system
  • True low pressure pre infusion
  • Included razor dosing tool with on board tamper

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great coffee once you have the settings dialed in I've had this for just over a month and have been loving the coffee it has been producing lately. The most important thing with this machine is you need fresh beans! I've tried extracting from a few different types of beans and the difference between freshly roasted and old beans is unbelievable. The settings on this machine are easy to tweak but you can expect to go through quite a bit of beans when first setting it up. I've noticed the settings also need tweaking when changing bean types to get the pressure gauge in the right zone. Now I've had it for a while and dialed in the settings perfectly, I get a great extraction every single time and coffee that easily rivals a cafe's.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love my coffee machine I have had this machine for 6 years - we make 2-4 coffees daily - every day - without fail. My son is 10 and he can make perfect coffee for us so its easy to use. We have taken it on holidays with us - packing it up and putting it in the boot while we drive for days so I can vouch for its durability! Alas it is now starting to wear out - the wand has had all the first few layers of whatever it is coated with worn off thru use and the seal in the water tank is starting to go - but I'm so pleased with it I'm here shopping for an exact replacement! I know $700 seems expensive - but our home made coffee costs us about $1 to make , saving $2.50 per cup. So the two of us save $5 a day - which means in a year its paid for itself!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best purchase in a long time! Bought this coffee machine a few weeks back and it has been the best purchase I have made in a long time! I had been looking for a coffee machine at home and after trying a few different types of pod machines, I couldn't get a coffee that tasted like proper barista coffee. I had become a bit of a coffee snob in recent years and didn't want to settle for an average coffee everyday (and the cost of buying coffees was starting to add up). Paired with fresh beans from Dimmatina, this machine makes coffees just as good as the coffees I was buying everyday. I will never go back to buying coffees again! Make sure to take care of this machine and clean after each use, it may take more time to make your coffee and clean the machine, but it is definitely worth it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Makes great coffe We have owned this machine for the last 6 months making at least 2-4 double shot cups per day. The only negative things I can think of is after getting the steam going and then pausing to put the jug under the wand it vents the built up steam and you have to start again. While it doesn't do it all the time it does it enough to be annoying. For the first 20-30 uses the grinder motor emitted a faint odour like the motor was getting a little warm, this has stopped now. The built in burr grinder works very well and cleaning is easy. Tips: 25-30 seconds pour is perfect(double shot) Fill you cups with water and heat in the microwave Buy a frothing thermometer If you take sugar, try putting it in the jug with the milk the froth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Consumer was right! This machine rated top of the pops with Consumer, so I went with it and I can now fully endorse their position on it. It has proven to be very easy to express a really good shot and to successfully steam a cupful of milk. The instructions are easy to follow and everything works just as described. I've found it is necessary to warm the cups with boiling water before expressing because too much heat will be drawn from the brew if you don't. I think that's because it is a domestic milk steamer without the power of a commercial machine. The great thing about that, though, is that it's almost impossible to overheat the milk. The only other thing I've found worth mentioning is that the automatic coffee doser usually overfills the filter basket in the portafilter (even with the minimum dose selected). I simply pop a clean saucer under the doser and then re-use the spilt ground coffee. Overall, really good machine that looks good, works well and it really great value for money!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love my machine I spent a bit of time reading and watching youtube videos about this machine before I bit the bullet and bought my beautiful black Barista Express BES870. This is the first coffee machine I have owned (previously borrowed my parents sunbeam and had mixed results). So many things to love about this machine. Its relatively easy to get a great coffee out of it (next time you are at a café you will be screwing your nose up as the one you make at home is better!!) I drink my coffee with milk so I prepare/froth this first. Do yourself a favour and buy a milk thermometer to help with getting the correct temp. I use mine every time I make a coffee. Also the jug provided is only big enough to do one serving of milk so its good to get a bigger one to save time when making coffees for your mates. I point the steam wand at the hole in the tray so it expels the water before the steam begins. Quickly turn it off. Put it in the milk and turn it on again. Once finished you will hear the machine cool itself. As the steam is far hotter than what you need to brew your coffee it will bring itself back to the correct temp rather than burn your coffee. Bean hopper is nice size, have had no issues with beans not sliding into the grinder or jamming like other reviews on other websites. I like it that you can lock it and remove to swap beans. Hmm the tutu factor.... My grind setting on the side of the machine is set to 7. I like the automatic filling of the filter basket. Single filter grind dial set to about 2o'clock. Double filter grind dial set waaayyy back to the 10o'clock setting at LESS. You will find it really heaps it, but by the time you knock it to collapse the coffee before tamping, it will be correct. It has a good tamper and great that its magnetically stored away. I started off using the pressurised dual wall baskets but have changed to the single wall now I'm more confident with the machine. Also the 'razor' was helpful at the start to guide me on the correct dose of coffee. Cons: It would be really nice if there was a warning light or something to tell you if you were running low on water. You just have to have a quick look each time you make a coffee otherwise it will catch you out. I do like the 'empty me' tag that pops up once the tray is full of water/grinds however do empty it as soon as starts to peek up. If you leave it too long it will overflow into the secret compartment that holds your cleaning goodies and filter baskets. Get pretty sick of cleaning that out once you have done it once or twice. (yes yes you are thinking ill clean it each time I use it, I thought that too......) Pros: Makes great coffee. Looks beautiful. Relatively compact being a grinder/espresso machine in one unit. Tips: Use fresh beans. Use fresh beans. Use fresh beans!!!! I've been told by a bean roaster to use them within 2 weeks of roasting (not when you opened the packet) and to store them in a glass jar. He also recommended a once a week cleaning cycle for optimum health of the machine rather than waiting for the clean me light to appear. Anyway. That was my novel. I hope it helps. I love my machine.
